Commuters will face a new wave of upheaval on Thursday as public transport workers join a general strike called by the country’s two main labor unions in protest at the government’s proposals for pension reform.
There will be no service on the national railways, or on the capital’s Proastiakos suburban railway, trolley buses and electric railway. The Athens metro will only run between 10 a.m. and 4 p.m. while buses and tram services will operate from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m.
Adding to the transport woes, taxi drivers, who usually enjoy a brisk trade on strike days, are to join the action. Motorists will face problems too as gas stations are to remain closed throughout the day.
Those with scheduled flights on Thursday are advised to check with their airlines as Greek air-traffic controllers are to join the action with a four-hour work stoppage, starting at 8 a.m.
Olympic Air announced on Tuesday that 16 domestic flights scheduled for Wed, Feb 2, most between Athens and island destinations, have been canceled.
