France: Nice: mall evacuated

French police evacuated Nice shopping centre after bomb scare ahead of England-Iceland match

Armed police have reportedly evacuated a busy shopping centre after a bomb scare in the centre of the French city of Nice, just hours before England’s Euro 2016 encounter with Iceland.

Local newspaper Nice Matin claims two bottles of gas were discovered at the entrance to the Lingostiere Centre.

A spokesman for the Alpes-Maritimes Prefecture said the package was checked out and cleared by security officials.

“They did what they had to do in these circumstances,” the spokesman said. “There was a bag but it was nothing suspect.”

However, local reports quoted police sources claiming disposal experts were called to defuse a “makeshift device”.

Supporters of both sides were among 2,000 people evacuated from the Carrefour Lingostiere centre, which is less than two miles away from the Nice Stadium, in the southern French city.
