Paris: Bomb threat, central Paris on lockdown

Central Paris on lockdown after police carry out controlled explosion on car.

Boulevard de la Madeleine and the surrounding area was cordoned off by armed French officers after the French authorities said they were investigating a possible bomb.

Police were seen near a parked black car close to the landmark L’église de la Madeleine church.

Bomb squad officers carried out a controlled explosion at 11.15am local time (10.15am BST) on a Fiat which was parked on one of Paris’ main thoroughfares.

Police cordons were put in place to allow explosives experts to blow a hole in the window of the car.

Pictures from the scene showed the vehicle with its bonnet open and surrounded by smashed glass.

A sniffer dog was brought in after the controlled blast had been performed to check for any other explosive traces.
