At least one person is dead following an “attack” near Egypt’s famous St Catherine’s Monastery, it is reported.
Four others are said to have been injured in the incident.
Unconfirmed reports say gunmen opened fire at a checkpoint near the monastery, while other sources say there was an explosion.
Some reports suggested the victims were police officers.
The monastery lies at the foot of Mount Sinai – famed throughout history as the spot where Moses received the 10 commandments.
