The Island of Spice

November 5, 2023 | Featured Destinations

Spice Island, or Grenada, is located in the Caribbean just south of St. Vincent and the Grenadines.  It's not a well known island, but definitely worth putting on your list and here are 5 reasons why:

  1. Fan of spices?  There are a number of plantations scattered across the island that farm nutmeg, cinnamon, ginger and cacao.  Visiting these plantations will not only show you how crops are turned into spices, but will give you a peek inside the island’s local culture, history and traditions.  Be sure to stop at Belmont Estate, a 17th century plantation as well as the spice market!
  2. Love to hike?  You can do a 15 minute to several hour hike through the Grand Etang Forest Reserve by picking a trail that best suites your needs.  Be sure to check out Grand Etang Lake, a naturally occurring body of water set in the crater of an extinct volcano. It’s about 36 acres and 530 m up from the sea.  A great place to have a picnic. After lunch, continue your hike to Seven Sisters Waterfalls.  Bring your bathing suit, water shoes and it’s advised to have a guide too.  Oh and don’t forget to take photos of all the flora and funa you will see along the way plus all the frogs, birds, lizards, armadillos, and mona monkeys you will see too
  3. Enjoy soaking your toes in the hot sand?  Grenada has beautiful white sandy beaches that eventually stretch out and under clear turquoise water.  Making the next reason even more enjoyable.
  4. Have a need to go underwater and uncover its treasures?  Then you will enjoy the diving and snorkeling opportunities available to you from shipwrecks to underwater sculpture parks.
  5. And last but certainly not least the food!  The residents take pride in creating their local dishes from fresh local fruit and vegetables farmed on the island.  Here is a secret.  If you love mangos then visit in March or April and be prepared to have your taste buds blown away.
