Active Destination Focus: Atlantic Canada

Comment célébrer le 150e anniversaire du Canada?

Canada is famed worldwide for its fall colour, and thousands of visitors come to experience the vivid colours we Canucks all associate with the autumn months. This fall why not enjoy a Canadian staycation and take in the scenery in Atlantic Canada?

Atlantic Canada is renowned for its hospitality and cultural mix of Celtic, Acadian, Scottish heritages. These are celebrated in such events as Nova Scotia’s Cape Breton Celtic Colours Festival, taking place this year October 7 to 15. A full slate of music, dance (including square dance and traditional step-dance lessons for the uninitiated!), music, crafts and more music, especially of the fiddling kind. Venues are located throughout surprisingly big Cape Breton Island, so be sure your Vision travel advisor sets you up with a rental car.

Another unusual festival is the Come All Ye one held in jaw-droppingly beautiful seaside hamlet of Port Rexton, about 90 minutes drive from St. John’s, Newfoundland. This time the focus is on song: people who love to sing (or those who sing strictly in the shower) enjoy five days of singing lessons with a local music prof…plus lot of free time for hiking, yoga, or just soaking up the relaxing ambience of the Fishers Loft Inn.

However you needn’t plan your trip just to see a special event. The maritime weather means that the fall colours last longer than they typically do in Eastern Canada, and of course that warm welcome is guaranteed 12 months of the year in Atlantic Canada.
